Intuitive Healing with Susan Grau
Curiosity led me to sit across from Susan Grau, with her looking right into my soul. I had not experienced mediumship prior to this one. Not knowing anything about me what so ever, Susan hit the nail on the head. “Why are you so sad?” she asked. I was just starting to see clear again after a hurtful split in my life. I was so busy making sure to ‘keep it all together’ for my kids and of course myself, at least in appearance. Susan led me back inside of myself so that I could pick up the broken pieces, glue them back together so that they were even stronger than they were before and move on with my life with the confidence to being ok.
Meet Susan Grau here, a lady of wisdom, you’ll soon find out why:
Susan, we met by sheer chance at a recent In Goop Health in LA and have been in touch ever since. This was my very first time meeting a medium. I can tell you I was nervous but curious at the same time. Can you introduce yourself to my readers?

You told me your story, about when your life changed. It was when you were 4 years old when two boys hid you in a freezer in the garage for fun when you experienced death. Can you share this with my readers? How long were you in there for? What happened next?
When I was 4 years old I was locked in an unplugged freezer in our garage. It felt like a very long time in there, but to my soul it felt like moments. I remember seeing bright ghostly-like figures thinking they were angels, and being asked to stop screaming because they would go get my mother. Next, I recall a very intensive journey into the afterlife, where I experienced very profound visions in many different rooms. I was looking down into a tunnel filled with beautiful light, words and DNA, which of course at the time I didn’t understand. The images remain so strong in my head to this day, but I’m positive it was more real than here. Fast forward from that experience when I came to, I was watching people watching me. They were looking in my windows, under my bed, in the corners of my room, down the hallway, it was all very frightening to me. I couldn’t comprehend what was going on. As time progressed, this became my new normal and I realized that people were speaking to me, but they weren’t like normal people. They appeared far away, yet close up they seemed denser, like ghosts. I assumed everybody saw these figures, and at some point I stopped being afraid. I would listen to things they’d say, but ultimately I followed my own path, like every other human being. I had a very strong, and rude awakening when some friends were playing with me and I told them their Grandmother is here and wants to play with us, they replied “my Grandma died”. My friends came at me pretty hard for that. This was a pivotal moment for me, I had realized other people weren’t seeing or hearing what I was. I can remember being younger than four and when my animals passed away I would see them float, but again, I thought that was normal. I can’t say that I was ever totally comfortable with it; I felt different and I was treated differently.
Was it this near-death experience that triggered your skill to communicate with the dead?
I don’t think so. I truly believe that I was born with this gift of seeing and knowing. I didn’t grow into it, if anything I grew more after that experience. I don’t know if I communicate with the dead as much as they wish to communicate with me. You see, we are a heartbeat away from them, and if our heart stops we are there with them. We find this so elusive, we think it’s not tangible, it cannot be held, it must not be. There are many things that are not tangible to our hands that exist, like oxygen. Some people see this as spooky or, some believe that this preys on those grieving. In reality, it is an intense NEED to help people heal with a beautiful gift that’s a little out of the ordinary. When a surgeon works on a human heart, we can’t see what his mind is thinking and experiencing. We know he has knowledge, years of study, and a particular protocol to follow. Honest and true Medium also use knowledge and a particular protocol that is unseen or not understood. Many can study the heart, but not many can open a heart and intuitively know how to repair it. It’s part of who the surgeon is and what they’ve practiced. As a Medium, it also feels like a natural flow it’s not simply an extension of me, it is part of me. To answer your question I do believe it was always there, but I also believe that our darkest past and our hardest experiences become our greatest asset in helping others heal. So yes, it did help, but it wasn’t the only process that guided me to becoming a Medium.
For readers who have never had the chance to meet someone like you, how would you describe the experience you can take them through? What are the most frequent questions you get from people?
Most clients come in as skeptics, and they’re unsure how to connect with Spirit, or if I can. My goal as a Medium is to provide evidence from their loved ones, that they’re around you and guiding you. The biggest question I hear, “Is this real?” I’d like everyone to know that is is very real, and although there are some fakes/phonies looking to capitalize off grief and pain; I come from a place of love, and my only desire is to help others heal. I never come from a space of ego of having to prove I’m a Medium. My greatest goal is for spirits to prove that they are with you. The hard part is when skeptics come in hoping I’ll prove something to them, but if they block out the messages, it makes my job impossible. It’s kind of like that feeling when someone wants something so badly enough, but nothing will ever be enough. They're seeking the impossible to make their beliefs possible. In doing so, they miss all messages of love being given to me for them. It’s never about the Medium, it’s about their own grief, their own need to heal, to let go and allow the Spirits to be around and feel them. I’ve never understood this thought process, but that’s because it’s my normal. In a true healer’s hands you are safe. I don’t know how I know the information that I give, I just know it comes from a sacred space to help others heal. I believe it comes from God, which I call source, it’s the only thing that makes sense to me. No one ever does anything to perfection, but I believe that’s the expectation people have of a Medium. Spirit speaks a different language, so when they’re talking to me I’m trying to decipher what it means. The language of the soul in the afterlife is not the language we speak, which makes my job that much more difficult. Imagine spending your entire day trying to step outside of your ego, so you can connect into your soul, to another soul that’s crossed over. There’s nothing easy about this task. We’re human, we question what we don’t know, so therefore we lack trust. By the end of the session, my goal is to be a trustworthy person, and that my client knows they’re in good hands. To achieve the highest level of knowing and healing for them. I don’t know how to describe the Mediumship process, but I do know it’s amazing.
How do you live with all these people around you asking to pass on messages to past ones and to living ones? Does it ever become stressful?
It can be overwhelming, but you learn to manage it with boundaries. I’ve learned to set boundaries with Spirit. In the beginning it was extremely difficult to handle, it was all-consuming, and it would cause me to literally shiver. I've learned through some amazing people and mentors in this industry how to “turn it off”, or set it for a later date. A boundary can be simply, “can we find another time to do this?” If Spirit wants the individual to receive a message, it will happen. Whether it’s from me in that moment, or perhaps I’ve written it down because it came to me at 2am, or by some other means at a later time. Again, my first goal is to be a trustworthy person so that when my client comes in they know I have their highest good in mind. If I’m honest with you, most people don’t ask me to pass on messages unless I’m at work, and this is where boundaries come in. More importantly, the stress is from how we deliver the information and the responsibility of helping people with this information. When the information is delivered adequately, it’s like witnessing a miracle of knowing their loved ones are there. This work is a huge responsibility and it carries with it a fear of causing harm, or of being incorrect. It’s an enormous responsibility to be an honest and trusting Medium. This is why I’m always furthering my education in the understanding of the afterlife. I’m in the process of earning my Doctorate in Divinity, with the intent that I offer a clearer understanding to others and communicate the messages in a healthy way. I am a counselor, this helps me not only gauge my clients emotional stability surrounding their loss but the innate understanding of grief. That’s why the responsibility is so powerful and sometimes frightening. On occasion, there are clients who come for the fun of coming to a Medium, but most of my clients have terrible pain and are trying to heal. They need to know that they’re not alone in their sorrow. To know that their loved one is with them. I can unequivocally say that I love what I do, it’s very healing for me as well.
What are your self-care rituals that keep you aligned, healthy and happy?
I wake up every morning and ask myself, “Who do I want to be today?(Kind? Loving? Thoughtful?, etc)” I thank and give gratitude to Spirit for another day. I incorporate light exercise daily for my physical and mental well-being, makes me feel invigorated after. I enjoy doing my hair and make-up, makes me feel more confident and ready to tackle my day. I love to put on a song that I enjoy; dance and sing along to raise my energy and vibration. Having acceptance and learning to continually find it through relationships and situations. I work on myself on a daily basis, taking responsibility for anything I may have done to unknowingly cause harm or hurt. I cook and take care of my family which is very healing for me. I love on my animals and I spend time in my jacuzzi. I make sure and (try to) get a lot of sleep, it helps when I’m not being woken up by spirits! Lastly, I keep friends around me who believe in me, love me, and honor who I am the way. In return, I love and honor who they are. That’s how I practice self-care.
When you took me through an encounter with my ancestors, you also saw a lot of sadness in me at the time and gave me incredible tips on how to handle emotions, aligning them with purpose. You are an incredible medium and life coach. I'm wondering when people come and see you, is it necessarily to reconnect with past souls.
Not at all, but I am soul healer and I do a lot of Intuitive healing. Whether it’s giving guidance for their journey, helping to assist with certain struggles, or learning how to manage the cards they’ve been dealt. I work with Spirit to give them the healing they need. As a soul reader, I am looking through Spirits' eye, into their soul to see what needs to shift, in order for my clients to find peace. Some of my favorite work is helping people see their value and their life purpose. Everyone is intuitive, and I love to help people build on this. To learn to trust their instincts, this is major for decision making. I want people to grow and be more, in the same way, I want to grow and be more. So I ask spirit to assist me in searching inside their souls to define what is plaguing them. To open it up, so that they can continue to move forward into their beautiful, sometimes extremely difficult life journey. To instil confidence and trust in their own personal journey, putting one foot in front of the other. I believe it’s always an inside job. I just assist them on how to seek and learn what that needs to look like for them. I'm not there to fix them or take their pain away, but to rid them of confusion and the compartmentalization of their feelings and truth. Once this happens, their true soul purpose is identified. I look at intuitive work as taking a pause, giving it a moment to process who you are, clean up the mess we’ve created, so you can move forward. Being free, knowing that you belong and that all your experiences have significance.
